E-learning platform from Germany – GDPR-compliant and ready to go

You need an e-learning platform that holds up legally and does not turn into an IT project first. eledia.cloud provides one built on Moodle – operated in an ISO 27001-certified data center in Germany, GDPR-compliant with a data processing agreement, and without license fees or per-user fees.

What is an e-learning platform?

An e-learning platform is a web application you use to publish learning content, manage participants and document progress. Learners sign in through a browser or an app, work through courses, submit assignments and take quizzes – whenever and wherever suits them.

What sets it apart from a shared drive: the platform understands courses, roles and grades. That means you can prove who completed which training, and when.

E-learning platform, LMS, learning platform – what is the difference?

Practically nothing. All three describe the same kind of system; they simply come from different vocabularies.

Term Origin Typically used in
E-learning platform marketing and everyday language tenders, web searches, conversations with decision-makers
LMS (learning management system) technical terminology IT departments, specialist literature, requirement lists
Learning platform the education sector schools, universities, ministries

If you need the technical distinctions in detail, the page on the learning management system covers the definition, the feature set and how an LMS differs from an LXP, an LCMS and an authoring tool.

What a good e-learning platform has to do

These are the points that decide whether a platform actually gets used or sits abandoned after one term.

  • Structure courses: organize content by topic or week, set prerequisites, map out learning paths
  • Assignments and quizzes: collect submissions, grade automatically, give feedback
  • Roles and permissions: cleanly separate teachers, learners, administrators and, where needed, parents
  • Records of achievement: document course completion and certificates – essential for mandatory training
  • Extensibility: your own plugins, H5P for interactive content among them
  • Live teaching: video conferencing inside the course instead of through a second vendor
  • Mobile access: browser and official app, offline included
  • Interfaces: single sign-on and connections to the systems you already run

For what Moodle covers in detail, see the feature overview. For live formats we embed BigBlueButton directly in Moodle – as an activity inside the course, with no switching between tools.

Why server location and data protection decide the case

An e-learning platform holds personal data: names, class or department assignments, grades, exam results, and in schools the data of minors. You are responsible for how that data is handled – not your software vendor.

That is why we run every platform exclusively in Germany, in an ISO 27001-certified data center. You get a data processing agreement that puts the cooperation on a clean legal footing. No data transfer to third countries, no analysis of your content for anyone else's purposes.

For what that means in practice and which questions to put to every provider, see GDPR-compliant Moodle hosting and the article on Moodle and GDPR.

For schools, companies and associations

The platform is the same one. The requirements are not.

Unlike MoodleCloud, you do not run into a 750-user limit and you can install your own plugins. For the direct comparison, see MoodleCloud alternative.
